This Friday was my first public appearance as Director for the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). As the Comox Valley representative I was chosen to meet with students at the North Island College (NIC) camous in Courtenay to talk with them about the benefits of choosing a career in real estate. On March 28th the Campbell River representative will be speaking to students in Campbell River, so make sure you attend if you have been thinking about a career in real estate.
As I anticipated, the majority of the interest came from the older students who have gone back to college to update their skills. What I found most interesting was the large number of people who thought that getting into real estate was as simple as applying for the job, so a large part of what I ended up talking about was the real estate course and the licensing process.
The purpose of VIREB's attendance at this event was primarily to change the way that people think about getting into real estate. Historically, realtors have chosen to get into real estate as a secondary career, while we would much rather see people choosing real estate as their first career. In the long run this will improve professionalism in the industry as we will see realtors stay in the industry longer and therefore devote more time and effort to enhancing their careers through technology and further education.
